Self-governing dependent territories (classified by the UN) are listed separately from their sovereign state and are set off in italics.
Antarctica has no permanent residents, but a number of governments maintain permanent research stations throughout the continent. The number of people conducting and supporting scientific research and other work on the continent and its nearby islands varies from about 1,000 in winter to about 5000 in the summer. Many of the stations are staffed year-round.
The European Union is a sui generis supranational union possessing "country-like" characteristics. The entity is composed of 27 member states. Its combined population has been estimated at 499,673,300 on 1 يناير, 2009, and it would be ranked 3rd if it were included in the list (7.4% of world population).
